So I just found out my credit score and it is baddd...525!!! Mostly medical bills but I have under a grand of debt. Anyway, I am currently paying things off and was wondering if there is a department store or something that would give a credit card so I can try and build my score. Anyone ever apply and get one? I don't care if its the lowest one but what would you suggest be the best and where can I get one you think?|||Start by getting a secured credit card at your bank. These usually work in such that you must pledge money before they will give you the card. Usually they credit company will tell you how much you must pledge (you have to give them the money first) before they will give you the card. The amount you pledge is usually equal to or greater than the credit limit on the secured credit card.|||Here are some ways to build credit --
Get a debit card for a bank account you already have -- but be sure that they actually report the payment history to the credit agencies. The debit card works just like checks and if there is no money in the account, the bank won't approve additional purchases until more money is deposited.
Another way is to deposit $400 or $500 in a bank and then ask for a $300 loan (not a credit card) and use the money in the account as security for the loan. ( Using the funds in the bank as "security for the loan" means that if you don't repay as agreed, then the bank takes the money in the account to pay off the loan -- but that would result in a negative transaction being posted to your credit history so don't do it.)
After getting the secured loan, don't spend the money! Instead, make the monthly payments for a few months and then pay the balance off early. The bank will report the payments as made on time and you will have at least one 'history' on your credit report.
After successfully paying off the first loan, wait a few months and take out another small loan, and again pay a few months then pay the balance before the due date. You will be building a credit history as well as building a good relationship with your bank.
Apply for a credit card and request a $350 limit. After paying timely on this card for a while, you can ask them to increase the credit limit to $500 and eventually ask that it be raised a little more. It's always a good idea to find a credit card that has NO yearly fee and also pay off the balance each month rather than just making monthly payments.
